Aid to Japan
We all share a deep concern and sympathy for the tragic and frightening events in northern Japan: the loss of lives, homes, communities, livelihoods, and the threat of further harm is almost incomprehensible. There are a number of efforts underway to raise funds to aid non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Japan; the list below includes links to many of those. We applaud efforts to raise needed funds for Japan, as well as the generosity of all the artists, galleries and collectors who have already donated.
We would like to recommend your support for Japanese recovery through a couple of channels. First, because of the ties between Minnesota and the potters of Mashiko, we especially encourage your support for the Mashiko Potters Fund, which will aid potters and ceramic artists whose studios and kilns were destroyed in the earthquake, along with the museums of Mashiko. Our sister organization, Mudflat Pottery School, in Somerville MA, is accepting donations for the Mashiko Potters Fund; all of the donations (with the exception of the credit card processing fee) will be sent to Mashiko (http://www.mudflat.org/general/donations.htm). In addition, The Japan Society in New York is accepting donations either on-line or by check; 100% of the contributed funds will go to selected NGOs with excellent track records for their work in Japan (http://www.japansociety.org/earthquake). We recommend these particular channels of support because of their link to the place and country we care about, and because they offer the best assurance that virtually all of your support will get to the intended recipients.
