Less is More vs. More is More

Do you ever wonder just how elaborate your pots should be?  How much decoration is too much?  How much is too little?  Where does your work fit into the decorative spectrum—from baroque to minimal?  This class will ask all of these questions of your work and help you explore two different approaches to making work on the potter’s wheel.  Taking the “more is more” approach, teaching artist Mike Helke will focus on intensive surface embellishments and elaborate forming techniques.  Countering this viewpoint, teaching artist Joel Froehle will focus on the “less is more” approach, making simple pots with clean lines and minimal surface decoration.  Helke and Froehle will alternately led class sessions, during which time they will demonstrate various surface decorating techniques, present slides, and work one-on-one with students.  The class will conclude with a final in-progress critique session, led by Joel Froehle.  Designed for students who have mastered basic throwing techniques.
