The exhibition included large and small scale work which translated the particular cultural and social environment of this southwestern artist into ceramic and multi-media installations. The NCC exhibition was coordinated with a multi-media exhibition at CreArte Chicano Latino Arts Center and Museum in Minneapolis. Both exhibitions, and an accompanying residency and workshop by Mr. Dominguez, were generously underwritten by a grant from the Jerome Foundation of Saint Paul.

This was a group exhibition of sculptural and functional works which had in common the medium of clay, and the referential and assembled nature of the pieces; that is, the shapes in the pieces referred to existing architectural, organic or manufactured forms, and the finished pieces generally were assembled from multiple parts. All of the artists hailed from outside the region.

McKnight Artists Exhibition

August 7 – September 12

Linda Christianson artMatthew Metz art
The first exhibition of a now-annual series featured recipients of the 1997 McKnight Ceramic Artists Fellowship grants – Linda Christianson and Matthew Metz. Both are potters, but the work of each is quite different from the other: Linda creates apparently "simple" wood-fired stoneware; Matt's porcelain soda- and wood-fired pots have extensive surface decoration with sgraffito drawings and sprigged objects. Both the exhibition and the catalogue published by the Center were underwritten by The McKnight Foundation as part of the Fellowship program.
