Ben Carter received a BFA in ceramics and painting from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida-Gainesville. He was a past resident artist at the Canton Clay Works, The Odyssey Center for Ceramic Art, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. In 2004, he opened Carter Pottery and has since been producing work for exhibitions across the United States. For two years, Carter lived in Shanghai, China, and worked as the educational director of the Pottery Workshop Shanghai. Of his pottery, Carter observes "color, form, and pattern are used to create nostalgia for a time when communal meals were the core of familial relationships."
