Alvarez was born in Mexico and raised in California, and holds an MFA from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco, and a BA from the University of California–Davis. A maker of figurative ceramics, her artwork has been influenced by her time as a non-emergency ambulance driver, and the impressions left by terminally ill children and elderly patients. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in recent exhibitions such as ENOUGH Violence: Artists Speak Out, Ohio Craft Museum, Columbus; Girls with Guns, Scott White Contemporary Art, La Jolla, California; and a solo exhibition in Mexico City, Claudia Alvarez Acercate, CENART, Centro Nacional de las Artes, Mexico City, Mexico. Her ceramics have also been featured in publications such as Ceramics: Art and Perception, American Craft, and NY Arts Magazine.
Alvarez was a McKnight Artist in Residence at NCC in Fall 2014.
