Debbie Schumer is a studio potter based in Minneapolis, MN. She began studying ceramics at College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN and continued her studies at The University of Iowa, receiving her BFA degree with a focus in design, ceramics, and illustration. Chuck Hindes, Bunny McBride, and Warren MacKenzie were influential instructors to Schumer. She currently works in a private studio space at Northern Clay Center and is a recent graduate of the MN NICE program. She strives to make pots that combine a pleasing aesthetic and easy functionality, bringing art into everyday life. She states, “I strive for a feeling of graceful strength in my work. I’m drawn toward simple forms, dramatic transitional planes and a sense of volume as if each piece has just taken a quick, deep breath.”
