Heather Nameth Bren
Lauderdale, Minnesota

Heather Nameth Bren received a Masters of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Kansas in 2003. Since then, Bren has received grants through the Jerome and McKnight Foundations and has been noted as an emerging artist by Ceramics Monthly.  She is a fiscal year 2013 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her functional ware is slipcast; colored slips are squeezed into a mold.  The final injection is often one color, which creates a patterned side and solid side.  Similar to painting, she is “trying to create a surface that contains both a sense of flatness and a sense of depth. I am layering information, pattern, and texture with color during various stages of the ceramic process, playing with opacity and transparency.”  In addition to her studio practice, Bren has been a Professor of Art since 2007 at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, Minnesota.
