Zac Spates graduated with a BA from St. John’s University in Minnesota. He then apprenticed with Mark Hewitt in North Carolina and began a long journey into wood-fire kiln building that took him from Minnesota to North Carolina to Wales. He currently fires his work, and the work of fellow potters, in the wood-fire kiln he built on his property in Hudson, Wisconsin. He is a full-time studio potter, as well as a part-time volunteer fire chief for the town of St. Joseph. He believes the way the pots are stacked in the kiln is more important to the pottery’s surface than the individual pieces by themselves. He utilizes simple glazes, if any, and slips most of his pots with clay, dug and refined from quarries in Central Minnesota.
