Out of the Labyrinth
In the United States, “Mexican ceramics” often calls to mind pre-Columbian pottery, folk ceramics such as those created in the village of Mata Ortiz, or the beautiful majolica Talavera ware and others. Out of the Labyrinth: Contemporary Mexican Ceramics will go beyond these traditional approaches. Curated by Robert Silberman, this exhibition will present the work of established figures in contemporary Mexican studio ceramics. The artists are: Gerardo AzcunagaGloria CarrascoIsadora CuellarJavier del CuetoGustavo PérezMaribel PortelaEduardo SarabiaPaloma Torres, and Xawery Wolski.

This exhibition will feature the work of seven emerging artists from the inaugural class of the Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education. Their work ranges from functional pots to handbuilt sculptural vessels to sand-cast installations. These bodies of work evolved through one-on-one dialogue with mentoring artists, individual research, and lively group critiques. Work in the exhibition is the result of yearlong investigations into each artist’s questions, motivations, and perspectives.
