May Featured Artists: Denecke, Spates, Swenson
May is the month to soak in ceramics in this region, and these three Midwestern artists represent a range of experience, technique, and firing methods. Denecke brings Japanese tradition and a lifetime of experience to her forms whether they are small drinking vessels or monolithic sculptures. Spates’ functional work evokes tactile memories of the crags and smooth planes of mountain climbing and is brought to life in wood-fire kilns on his property. Swenson’s talent with the brush is as frenzied, yet purposeful, as the multitude of ways he creates his thrown, slipcast, handbuilt, and press-molded pottery.
