25th Anniversary Interview: Mike Norman, Sales Gallery Artist

How would you describe your current relationship with NCC?

It's a loving relationship.

How did you get involved in NCC?

I knew of Peter Leach, Gary Crawford, and Warren MacKenzie; Andy Boss and Joan Mondale as well… I knew they were chartering the organization. I was not directly involved, but I knew it was happening. When NCC was in its first home in St. Paul, I became a member and started selling work.

Why do you continue to be involved?

NCC is such a wonderful extension for the clay community: the exposure of artists to the public, as a teaching resource center, and a source of support for upcoming artists. NCC is tremendous in these regards. NCC has been a very good supporter of my work and the selling of my work.

What is unique about NCC?

The people that are part of the organization.

What has been the most gratifying thing that has happened for you in your time with NCC?

Getting a McKnight Fellowship and the resulting show of my work. The grant provided me with money to cover overhead costs so I could fully devote my time to the studio. In hindsight, I could have used that grant money to purchase stock in Amazon or iPhone, which would have provided me with more income, but I did sell all the work that was part of that show.

Also, I have always used my drawings, or made “decorative” work on the claybody. I was asked to create the drawings for the ClayMobile. I am so glad the community has not added graffiti to it!
